Why These Questions Matter
Bariatric surgery is a major, life-changing procedure. The right surgeon at the right hospital will produce excellent outcomes. The wrong choice can result in serious complications, inadequate follow-up, and long-term nutritional problems.
These ten questions will help you assess any bariatric surgery provider in Turkey — and elsewhere. The quality of the answers you receive will tell you as much as the answers themselves.
1. How many bariatric procedures do you perform per month?
Why it matters: Volume correlates with outcomes. High-volume bariatric surgeons develop refined technique and encounter (and resolve) a wider range of complications. Look for surgeons performing a minimum of 20-30 bariatric procedures per month.
A good answer: A specific number, not a vague response. "Over 50 per month" is better than "quite a few."
2. What is your 30-day complication rate for gastric sleeve?
Why it matters: Every honest surgeon tracks this. The internationally accepted benchmark for laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy is a major complication rate of under 3%. Minor complications (nausea, temporary leaks detected and resolved) should also be disclosed.
A good answer: A specific percentage and an explanation of what complications were included in that figure.
3. Is your hospital JCI accredited?
Why it matters: JCI accreditation is the international benchmark for hospital quality. For major abdominal surgery, operating in a JCI-accredited facility significantly reduces risks related to infection control, anaesthesia protocols, and emergency response capability.
A good answer: Yes, with documentation available. If no, ask about Turkish Ministry of Health certification and ISO 9001 status at minimum.
4. Who performs the pre-operative psychological evaluation?
Why it matters: Most international bariatric guidelines recommend psychological assessment before surgery. It is not a formality — it identifies patients who may struggle with the post-operative dietary changes required for success.
A good answer: A licensed psychologist or psychiatrist performs this assessment, not a coordinator or nurse.
5. What nutritional support is included post-operatively?
Why it matters: Bariatric surgery permanently alters nutrient absorption. Vitamin and mineral deficiencies — particularly B12, iron, calcium, and vitamin D — are a real long-term risk without proper supplementation and monitoring.
A good answer: Specific supplement protocols, a follow-up dietitian appointment, and a clear schedule for long-term blood monitoring.
6. What happens if I experience complications after I return home?
Why it matters: Most complications that require intervention occur in the first 30 days. If you are back in the UK when this happens, you need to know the plan.
A good answer: The clinic provides a 24/7 emergency contact number, will liaise with your UK GP or hospital if needed, and covers complications directly related to the procedure for a defined post-operative period.
7. What is your leakage rate for gastric sleeve?
Why it matters: Anastomotic leakage is the most serious complication of sleeve gastrectomy. The global benchmark for experienced surgeons is under 1%. Anything significantly higher is a concern.
A good answer: A specific rate. Reluctance to answer this question is a warning sign.
8. Do you perform revisional bariatric surgery?
Why it matters: A clinic that only performs primary procedures may not fully appreciate the long-term picture for their patients. Clinics experienced in revisional surgery have typically treated a wider range of outcomes.
A good answer: Yes, with specific experience in conversion from sleeve to bypass or SADI-S.
9. What is your hospital's ICU capacity?
Why it matters: Bariatric patients have specific anaesthesia and recovery requirements. In the rare event of a serious complication, ICU capacity and experience with high-BMI patients can be life-saving.
A good answer: The hospital has a dedicated ICU with bariatric experience and advanced life support capability.
10. Can I speak with a previous patient?
Why it matters: No question is more revealing than the experiences of patients who have been through the process. Reputable clinics will readily facilitate this.
A good answer: Yes — with the previous patient's consent — or a referral to an active online community of their patients.
